In a gloomy valedictory at the conclusion of his assignment as
U.S. ambassador to Burundi, Robert Krueger told his staff early this
month that the tiny African country faces "a greater chance for
major conflagration, than at any time in the last two years."
Krueger, a former Democratic senator from Texas, sent the
cable after being withdrawn from the country nearly eight months ago
and given a new assignment. The ostensible reason for his ouster was
that his life was in danger, but some officials said Krueger was too
outspoken in demanding action to forestall violence in Burundi
before it assumed genocidal proportions as in neighboring Rwanda two
years ago.
