Harvard professor N. Gregory Mankiw, author of the world's most popular college-level introductory economics textbook, last night was nominated to become chairman of the president's Council of Economic Advisers.

A free-market advocate known for illustrating his texts with colorful, easy-to-understand examples as well as for his more advanced work on monetary policy and other topics, Mankiw succeeds R. Glenn Hubbard. Mankiw, 45, needs to be confirmed by the Senate.
