By the end of the fiscal year, Natick's Sassamon Trace golf course is projected to be at least $300,000 in the red, prompting town officials for the first time to discuss either leasing the property or closing the course altogether.

The town-owned golf course, which opened three years ago atop a former landfill, has never broken even but, until recently, town officials were saying it would just take "a few years" for the course to become profitable.

That mode of thinking appears to have shifted.
