Strom Thurmond, the oldest senator ever at 93, easily won
nomination yesterday for an eighth term against a South Carolina
Republican who tried to make an issue of his age.
In other states holding primaries, Arkansas and Maine were
choosing candidates to replace retiring senators and North Dakota
had a ballot issue that would allow video gaming machines in
restaurants and bars. The ballot issue was trailing in early
returns.
With 93 percent of precincts reporting in South Carolina,
Thurmond had 61 percent, state Rep. Harold Worley had 30 percent,
and college instructor Charles Thompson had 9 percent.
