Andrea Levario's son Pablo was a normal baby until he turned 20
months old. Then his belly bloated like a balloon. "His abdomen
distended forward and to the sides like a frog," his mother said. "He
looked like a starving child."
When the Alexandria, Va., resident took her son for a checkup, one
doctor said, "this is the way a toddler's belly is supposed to look,"
as if to calm an overly anxious mother. But Pablo's baby sitter, a
nurse, suggested that the change and discomfort in the easygoing,
brown-haired boy was not normal.
Over the next year, one specialist told Levario her son was
constipated and prescribed laxatives. "He might have parasites,"
