Inside the old Maxwell Products warehouse in Dorchester, a blue whale of a building where Hal Cohen used to manufacture boxes, a black dog named Amigo friskily greets a visitor. So Cohen leads his pet into the cluttered, cavernous room with seascapes on the walls, porcelain cups in a dusty cabinet, winter hats from his daughter's flea market, and an ever-running television, a room that he once called home.

Amigo is the dog that Cohen, a neighborhood activist, found at the pound to help a young expectant father learn responsibility. The room is the place where Cohen lived, illegally, for five years until the city condemned his building in February.
