Passion. Political intrigue. Eccentric personalities. A rich
history. And at least one instance of nudity. Town meeting would seem
to have all the necessary elements to draw a crowd.
As Massachusetts nears the end of annual town meeting season,
which arrives each year with the first buds and crocuses, the last of
the voters will file into schools and meeting rooms this month to
wrangle with issues from multimillion-dollar building projects to the
disposal of old library books.
But the number of people willing to give up an evening or more to
offer yeas and nays on the business of their community is an ever-
shrinking minority in most towns, both in the area and throughout New
England.
