SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The birth was uneventful. Quite
truthfully? It was barely memorable. There were no tremendous claps
of thunder, no streaks of brilliant light piercing the barn, no wise
men emerging from behind the haystacks bearing gifts and
proclamations of greatness.
On April 20, 2000, a foal entered this world at the McMahon place
on Fitch Road, right off Route 9p, near the grove of the lazy
willows, and the faded brick house, and the emerald fields where
sleek stallions gallop within the gated confines of the farm.
"People ask if there was some kind of sign," said Anne McMahon,
laughing lightly. "Like what? A flock of eagles? He was a nice foal.
