HAVERHILL - The Merrimack Valley can be fertile ground for companies in the emerging field of homeland security.

That, at least, is the thinking of some municipal officials and business leaders in the region who have recently begun talking about ways the region can gain a foothold in the fast-growing field.

"Homeland security is not simply the next best thing, it's the next best thing that the Merrimack Valley can do well," said Haverhill Mayor John J. Guerin Jr.

He said the valley is positioned to attract investment from firms in the homeland security field because it has the skilled labor and available industrial space.
