Come late September, it will again be possible to enter Rome's
grand Doria Pamphilj palace and -- amid frescoed, mirrored splendor
-- see one of the world's greatest private collections of Old Master
paintings and sculptures.
Meanwhile, the cream of that collection can now be seen in
"Masterpieces From the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj" at the National
Gallery West Building. The 10 paintings and two sculptures, among
them major works by Velazquez, Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian, Guercino
and Bernini, are spending this rare summer abroad while the
Renaissance palace back home undergoes renovations.
Two spellbinding masterpieces by Velazquez and Caravaggio
alone are worth the trip downtown. But ...
