Cara Krinsky did not know much about greyhounds when she got her first one from Greyhound Friends Inc. the day before Thanksgiving in 1985.

The organization, which at the time boarded greyhounds at Brookline Animal Hospital, was offering a pure-white dog that day, but it looked gray from rolling in newsprint in the kennel.

The dog, named Ghost, "wouldn't let me leave him," Krinsky recalled during an open house Sunday celebrating Greyhound Friends' 20th anniversary and the expected August completion of a new adoption kennel at the agency's home on Saddle Hill Road in Hopkinton. When Krinsky got Ghost in the car, she said, "he promptly threw up all over me."
