Barely anyone would have known it from looking at him on the
last day of school yesterday, but the tiny third-grader sitting in
the front row in a wrinkled white shirt, brown tie and shiny, black
shoes could not read or write a word a little more than a year ago.
That was all behind him yesterday. William Motley, 8, grinned
as his teacher called his name in the end-of-the-year recognition
ceremony.
"This is the greatest improvement in the history of elementary
school," announced William's teacher, Mark Lewis. "William went from
literally not being able to read and write to scoring in the 99th
percentile on the {standardized} test. He's a superstar."
