Stefanie Maria Graf celebrated her birthday last week at the
top of her game. The previous weekend she had collected her fifth
French Open singles title, the 19th Grand Slam tennis championship
of her career. Adored in her native Germany, respected everywhere
else, she is the most famous female athlete in Europe, if not the
world. And she is fabulously wealthy -- a "global commodity," as one
adviser puts it -- whose total earnings exceed $100 million. Not bad
for 27.
Yet as Steffi Graf prepares to defend her title at Wimbledon
next week, she faces some serious personal and professional
obstacles. A bout with tendinitis forced her to withdraw Monday from
