The long jump always has been kind to Carl Lewis. When he made
his first U.S. Olympic team in 1980 as an 18-year-old, he did it in
the long jump.
Tonight he made his final Olympic team in -- the long jump.
Lewis, who will turn 35 on July 1, became the first U.S. male
track and field athlete to qualify for five Olympic Games when he
took the third and last Olympic long jump berth by one inch at the
U.S. track and field trials.
"I couldn't even have imagined this when I started," a
jubilant Lewis said, now facing an opportunity to win his fourth
Olympic gold medal in the event. "I don't even remember my first
Olympics. It seems like two decades ago. It's been an amazing run.
