New England is certainly not Iowa. Our farmland does not stretch
as far as the eye can see. Nor does the local economy turn on the
price of corn. Nevertheless, farming is crucial to the future of New
England. Without it, we are in danger of losing the landscape that
defines our region - and draws millions of tourists (and their
dollars) to wander our country roads.
A failed farm economy could doom our small towns and further
increase rural poverty and unemployment. More to the point, increased
dependence on a globalized food supply and distant factory farms is
neither safe nor sensible.
Fortunately, New England's farmers are transforming themselves for
new times, new markets, and new ...
