Next Friday, the doors of St. Ambrose School in Fields Corner
will close permanently after 67 years. For the Rev. Vincent Von Euw,
pastor of St. Ambrose Parish for 13 years, it marks the sad end to a
long struggle.
Last year, facing mounting debt, Von Euw reduced the academic
program, eliminating grades 5 through 8, to cut costs. It wasn't
enough, and help from years past - bingo - wasn't there anymore.
"What bothers me most," said Von Euw, "is that the children are
being uprooted."
He tells the story of a kindergarten student, Zachary. When the
boy's family told Zachary that St. Ambrose was closing, he put his
hands over his ears and shouted, "I never want to go to school
