I was especially curious about the man who was bitten by the
copperheads in Frederick County, Md {"Md. Man Suffers 5 Snakebites,"
Metro, June 7}. Remarks by Tim Hoen, president of the Maryland
Herpetological Society, concerning the snakes' "balling" also caught
my eye.
In 1989 while doing some research on Appalachia, I found
myself walking in the Breaks Interstate Park on the
Virginia-Kentucky border. I heard a commotion in the underbrush, and
after I stopped to see what it was, I was surprised to see a mess of
copperheads doing what seemed to be some kind of war dance. Another
couple came along, and we stood at a safe distance viewing the
spectacle for perhaps five minutes, after ...
