Local officials still haven't given up hope that someday the people at Devens will have a zip code of their own.

The former Army base used to have a zip code, after all.

But when the government decided to close Devens and other bases, the zip codes went the way of the military posts.

These days, the people who live and work at the former base use an Ayer zip code, but they call their community Devens.

Sometimes that leads to an awful lot of confusion.

The former base straddles Ayer, Harvard, and Shirley. Although it's called Devens, it is not an officially recognized town. But for many, it is a community.
