To Colleen Lange, residents of Devens are like pioneers. A close- knit village with a distinct sense of individuality, she says, this community still lacks what residents in other towns may take for granted: a zip code, its own public schools, and formal recognition as a town.

"There's no other situation like it. . . . It's like a new frontier out here," said Lange, who moved to the former military base after the Army sold it in 1996.

Nowhere have the struggles of this burgeoning community of 100 families been felt more than in education, where debate about where Devens students should attend public schools is ongoing.
