Article: High Court to Consider Clinton Immunity Claim; Harassment Case Likely Pushed Past Election

The Supreme Court agreed yesterday to consider President Clinton's claim that the sexual harassment lawsuit brought by former Arkansas state employee Paula Corbin Jones should not proceed while he is in office, an action that likely postpones further developments in the case until after the November election.

Clinton's lawyers sought the action by arguing that a president should not be vulnerable to private civil lawsuits while serving in the White House except in the most exceptional circumstances. The court is not expected to hear oral arguments in the case until December or January. A decision would be handed down sometime before the court recesses in the summer of 1997.
