Steffi Graf has been a grouch this past week. She couldn't
help it. Her knee hurt. Her practice time on grass -- a difficult
surface to adjust to after the clay courts of the French Open -- was
limited. And of course, she still has all those tax problems to fret
over.
"I think I've not been the nicest person, probably, the last
few days," she said this afternoon.
It did not take much to change her demeanor. On as near to a
perfect day as one could ask for, Graf had little trouble
dispatching Ludmila Richterova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-1, in
the first match in her attempt to claim a seventh Wimbledon title.
Any concerns that Graf's sore left knee -- she was almost limping on ...
