Now they find themselves - just 250 residents - celebrating July Fourth together, holding barbecues, and settling local issues in monthly community meetings.

The 4,400-acre tract known as Devens,

which once housed tank companies, infantrymen, and Army hospitals, is feeling more like home to these pioneers.

Community pride is growing, too, as some residents yearn for that most New England form of identity: incorporation as a town.
