Lauren Van Luling knows how to illustrate the isolation some
women experience after a miscarriage. "There's no Hallmark card for a
miscarriage. It's really lonely," she said. "You feel like you belong
to this secret club that no one wants to belong to."
Van Luling, a 31-year-old nurse at South Shore Hospital in
Weymouth, has had five miscarriages. But with the help of Rosemary
Phalen, the hospital's early pregnancy loss coordinator, Van Luling
has learned not to suffer silently or to allow others to do so.
Van Luling now serves on the hospital's patient advisory board
that helps women cope with pregnancy loss, supports changes in
hospital procedures to ease the loss, and educates the public ...
