WASHINGTON - Administrators at the US Air Force Academy and Air
Force leaders at the Pentagon ignored reports of more than 140
sexual assaults on female cadets for a decade and, through their
indifference and incompetence, allowed a climate of hostility toward
women to pervade the military academy at Colorado Springs, a civilian
panel created by Congress reported yesterday.
"Sexual assault problems [at the academy] are real and continue to
this day," said former representative Tillie Fowler, a Florida
Republican who chaired the seven-member committee and who presented
its findings of "a deep chasm in leadership" to Defense Secretary
Donald Rumsfeld and Air Force Secretary James Roche ...
