I believe the problems caused by subsidized housing in the Mount
Vernon area were exaggerated by Tod Robberson's article {"Hard
Feelings Over Subsidized Housing in Mount Vernon," front page, April
20}. The impression given was that housing programs have attracted
low-income residents to the area.
I served as a priest in Mount Vernon from 1979 to 1991. The
area has always had a minority population of lower-income residents,
some of whom claim descendancy from George Washington's slave
population.
Over the years a partnership of public and private groups such
as United Community Ministries and Good Shepherd Housing has worked
to improve the situation of our lower-income residents. I ...
