DEVENS In a move designed to boost economic development and community spirits, the US Postal Service is going to give Devens its own ZIP code.

The welcome news was announced at the former military base on Monday afternoon, but the actual ZIP code will not be revealed until January and is not expected to be in service until July.

To people like Martha Demerjian, who owns a business and a home on the former Army base, it's important that Devens have its own ZIP code. She said that everyday mail order transactions get complicated when she tells people she lives in Devens, and then provides them with an Ayer ZIP code.
