It is early in the baseball season for a last stand, but with
5 1/2 months remaining in the six-month trial that is a pennant
race, the Baltimore Orioles are threatening to bury the Boston Red
Sox in the American League East standings.
On a chilly evening at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the
Orioles continued to thrive and the Red Sox matched their worst
season start in franchise history. The Orioles rode the pitching of
David Wells, who nearly threw his second major league shutout, to a
6-1 victory tonight before 40,017.
The Orioles improved baseball's best record to 10-2. They are
8-1 at home, and they widened their AL East lead to 3 1/2 games --
