When Archbishop Williams opened its boys basketball season with a
68-57 road win over defending Division 4 state champion Matignon Dec.
17, it was easy to dismiss the upset as a fluke. After all, Matignon
is a powerhouse and Archbishop Williams won just five games over the
past two seasons.
But two days later, the Braintree school followed up with a gutsy
49-46 victory over the team that won the two Division 4 titles prior
to Matignon, St. Mary's of Lynn.
If the Matignon game didn't send a message to the world of small
school basketball, the St. Mary's game did: The Bishops, who haven't
had a winning season since 1991 and haven't been to the postseason
since 1992, are a team to contend with ...
