TEN YEARS AFTER NAFTA WAS ESTABLISHED AND ONE YEAR BEFORE ITS
PROPOSED EXPANSION THROUGH THE FTAA (FREE TRADE ASSOCIATION OF THE
AMERICAS) TREATY, FREE TRADE CONTINUES TO BE CONTROVERSIAL.
Democratic presidential candidates John Kerry, John Edwards and
Dennis Kucinich have expressed varying degrees of opposition to
aspects of NAFTA. Republican President Bush reluctantly ended steel
tariffs, but his refusal to reduce US agricultural subsidies led to
an abrupt ending of FTAA negotiations with Brazil last November.
Free trade is resisted or criticized not only by US political
leaders, but also by the citizens of many countries around the world,
