James S. Hadley, 70, an unflappable funeral director who escorted hundreds of Bostonians to their final resting places, died of respiratory failure March 4 in a Boston nursing home.

"He let nothing bother him," his wife, Florence (Avent) Taylor Hadley, said yesterday.

The only child of James and Lucy (Thorpe) Hadley, Mr. Hadley was born in Boston. He was inspired to enter the business by his father, also a funeral director.

After graduating from English High School, he served in the Army from 1956 to 1958, before entering New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences.
