Alistair Cooke, whose suavely assured manner made him an
institution on both sides of the Atlantic, as host of PBS's
"Masterpiece Theatre" and through his weekly "Letter from America"
radio broadcasts, died yesterday at his home in New York City. He
was 95.
Mr. Cooke had retired this month after 58 years of presenting
"Letter from America." At 2,869 shows, it was the world's longest-
running speech radio program.
"I have had much enjoyment in doing these talks and hope that some
of it has passed over to the listeners, to all of whom I now say
thank you for your loyalty and goodbye," Cooke said when he stepped
down on the advice of his doctor.
