It hasn't been the kind of season Methuen softball coach Judy Kelley expected.

Sure, there were key losses in personnel due to graduation, but with several seasoned veterans due back, Kelley had high hopes of improving upon last year's 13-9 record. Three season-ending injuries this year took a big chunk out of those hopes.

So, with the regular season winding down last week, Methuen, instead of challenging for the Merrimack Valley Conference title, had a lackluster 6-8 after 14 games, and was fighting for its tournament life.
