Article: U.S., U.N. Consider Peace Force to Counter New Violence in Burundi

Spurred by fear of new violence in Burundi, U.S. and U.N. officials are discussing formation of an international military force that could intervene if feuding Tutsi and Hutu tribes engage in massacres in that central African nation.

Concern that Burundi is skidding toward a replay of the civil war that killed thousands of people in neighboring Rwanda has nagged at the United Nations for months. But, despite repeated warnings by Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali that the situation is deteriorating rapidly, no member states have been willing to take the lead in forming and contributing troops to the kind of multinational force that the secretary general says might be required.
