For her second movie, the Oscar-nominated writer and actor Nia
Vardalos has traded a Greek wedding for big, fat cabaret shows. In
"Connie and Carla," she and Toni Collette play Chicago dinner theater
singers who, on the run from a mobster, disguise themselves as drag
queens at a Los Angeles lounge. The movie, which opens Friday, also
stars David Duchovny, Stephen Spinella, and, in a small part, Debbie
Reynolds.
"Connie and Carla" could seem like a comeback of sorts for
Vardalos: She's lain low in the two years since "My Big Fat Greek
Wedding," not believing she'd get to make a second movie - never mind
that her first was a monster hit. She made the decision to appear in
