No one can say for sure how many Fourth of July parades there have been in Pepperell, and no one can remember a time when there wasn't one. But that could soon change.

If the volunteer committee in charge of Pepperell's July Fourth activities does not get more members, the town and the people from neighboring communities who have flocked to the event year after year could be without a parade.

"Putting on the Fourth of July is a lot of work, and there is not enough manpower," said Rose Hartwell, vice president of the committee, which has about five active members. "Despite the popularity of the events, getting enough volunteers to pull it off has always been a major struggle."
