Throughout 1995 and into the first three months this year,
investing in the stock market was easy: You put the money in, then
watched it grow.
Recently, though, the ride has turned bumpy, and many
investors, particularly novices, are wondering whether to continue
investing or sit on their money until a clear trend emerges. Bonds
no longer provide a safe haven, as their prices gyrate along with
interest rates.
But for many Americans, investing in stocks and bonds remains
the only realistic way to accumulate the nest eggs they need -- for
