Devens now has something to call its own: a ZIP code.

The 01434 code, which went into effect on July 1, will make conducting everyday business transactions easier for the 78 businesses and 105 families at the former military base.

But some people are wondering what this means for the future of a pioneering community that spans three towns and has no real municipal designation.

"It's good," Devens resident Mary Leonhardt said of the long- awaited ZIP code, "but it carries with it the supposition that we are going to be our own town, and the community is divided on that."
