EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Manchester United's image might have been
tarnished in recent days, but the Red Devils regained some
credibility with a 1-1 tie with AC Milan yesterday.
Coach Alex Ferguson had presented a lineup of junior players and
reserves in matches in Chicago and Philadelphia, then was persuaded
by organizers and sponsors of the three-game US exhibition tour to
send for reinforcements. Paul Scholes and Mikael Silvestre answered
the call, arriving the day before the match, then provided the
dynamism, stability, and merciless professional fouls missing from
previous games against Bayern Munich (0-0 tie) and Celtic (2-1 loss).
