James Karrick Woolnough, 85, an Army general who retired in
1970 at Fort Monroe, Va., as commander of the Continental Army, died
of cancer May 30 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. A resident of
the Washington area off and on since 1937, he lived in Arlington.
Gen. Woolnough spent 18 of his 38 years of military service at
the Pentagon, where he was chief of staff of the NATO standing
group, director of operations and plans in the Army chief of staff
office and deputy chief of staff for personnel. He served in Europe
during World War II, where he commanded the 393rd Infantry Regiment.
He was a regiment commander in Korea during the Korean War and
returned to South Korea in the early ...
