WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT NORTHERN IRELAND COULD REACH THE 10TH
ANNIVERSARY OF THE CEASE-FIRES WITH SO LITTLE PRESS ATTENTION? THE
ROAD TO PEACE HAS BEEN A LONG ONE, AND NOW THE REGION HAS REACHED A
WATERSHED. FINALLY, NORTHERN IRELAND IS STABLE, AND THAT DOESN'T
MAKE THE HEADLINES. AS ONE RECENT VISITOR TO THE NORTH REMARKED, "THE
NORMAL IS NOW NORMAL." Six years ago in Belfast, when I had the
privilege of announcing the Good Friday Agreement, I expressed my
wish that the hopes of the people in Northern Ireland would be
realized through implementation of the agreement. In other parts of
the world, many of those aspirations are taken for granted.
