She heard the rumbling at dawn.
The sound of Hutu rebels crashing through her Tutsi neighbors'
wood-and-straw huts sent Martha Gakobwa, 45, stumbling out of her
tiny four-room home last week. She had stirred her husband, son and
granddaughter, hoping they would awake quickly enough to follow her.
They did not. Rebels shot her husband to death. They
bludgeoned her 12-year-old son with a hammer. They stabbed her
granddaughter in the belly.
Pandemonium ensued, as her neighbors in this eastern Burundi
town scurried for safety, leaving rebels to burn their houses and
belongings. After more than two hours, 50 people, all Tutsis, were
dead. Forty-four were women and children.
