After 54 years, the "Tales of Manhattan" are finally complete
and ready for home video viewing.
When the stylish charade was released in 1942, a nine-minute
sequence with W.C. Fields and Margaret Dumont was cut, considered
too funny for the seriousness of the rest of the movie.
Critics for the most part enjoyed the remainder of the film,
which had an all-star cast that included Charles Boyer, Rita
Hayworth, Henry Fonda, Ginger Rogers, Charles Laughton, Edward G.
Robinson, Paul Robeson, Ethel Waters, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson,
Thomas Mitchell, George Sanders and Cesar Romero.
People at 20th Century Fox recently rediscovered the footage
and restored it to the original film, ...
