Check into a bed-and-breakfast inn in Taos, N.M., and you may
get the feeling that you've just checked into an art gallery.
Chances are you have.
Taos, known for its thriving artists' colony, also has more
than 40 fine B&Bs, many of which display locals' work. It's a way
for innkeepers to get paintings to hang on their walls without
having to pay for them. Indeed, many of these artful lodgings don't
even deduct a commission when a painting sells. The artist gets the
money, and the innkeeper gets yet another new painting to decorate
the walls.
And this month, visitors to Taos also can enjoy local artwork
