Eddie Murray carved his niche among baseball's immortals
tonight. The Baltimore Orioles' designated hitter hit his 500th
career home run, becoming the 15th major leaguer to do so and
joining Hank Aaron and Willie Mays as the only players in baseball
history to amass 3,000 hits and 500 homers.
Murray, 40, became the first new member of the 500-homer club
since Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Mike Schmidt in 1987. He's
the third player with 500 home runs to have spent at least part of
his career with the Orioles, joining Frank Robinson and Reggie
Jackson (who spent one year -- 1976 -- with the team). Murray is the
