Dr. Robert H. Richie Jr. had some unique ways of treating the
countless children he saw during more than 35 years as a Cambridge
pediatrician. When a child with an aching ear rebuffed attempts to
examine it, the doctor would tweet like a bird, tell the child that
the sound came from the offending ear, and completely charm his
patient.
When he had to put a Band-Aid on a finger, he drew a little face
on it. He made sure the infant scale was not too cold when a small
bottom was placed on it. He would examine a fearful child sitting on
a parent's lap. He never wore a white coat and he always had a kindly
twinkle in his eye.
