Gift cards were hot; department stores were not. The pricier the goods, the better they sold. American Eagle Outfitters was the store to shop; Aeropostale was so 2003. And for stores with all the wrong stuff, not even huge discounts saved Christmas.

For retailers, 2004 was a holiday season of winners and losers.

"It was a mixed bag," said Chris Donnelly, a partner in the retail practice of Chicago consulting firm Accenture. "Some did well. Some didn't."

Overall, sales at chain stores open at least a year (a measure known as same-store sales) were up 3.1 percent over December 2003. That's on track to meet most analysts' expectations for a "moderately jolly" holiday retail season.
