Aleksander Kwasniewski, a former Communist Party member and
now the Polish president, came to Washington this week to lobby for
his country's integration into NATO. While in Washington, the new
Polish leader struck some other sensitive chords as well. The
dynamic president, 41, brought proposals for a protected zone around
the former Nazi death camps at Auschwitz and Birkenau, which he
discussed with officials from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and
the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, which acts as the museum's
board.
The plan, a working document awaiting final approval, strives
to preserve "the sanctity of the place and its historical
