Article: FAST ACELA TRAINS TO BE SIDELINED UNTIL THE SUMMER, AMTRAK SAYS

WASHINGTON - Amtrak's flagship Acela Express service will not return until summer, Amtrak said yesterday, but will be replaced for now by slower trains on a limited schedule in an attempt to retain passengers until mechanical problems on the high-speed Acela trains are fixed.

Amtrak's senior vice president of operations, William Crosbie, said no Acela Express trains would return to service until the manufacturer and subcontractors build and install new brake systems.

Amtrak found cracks in about 300 brake sets and has not decided whether it needs to replace all 1,440 brake sets. The railroad has only 70 spare sets.
