WHEN INTERIOR ARCHITECT LISA FOSTER heard from her friend John
Horner that he needed a kitchen for the Somerville gas station he
was converting to his home and studio, she knew that sticking to a
budget was of the essence. "He wanted something that looked
expensive but cost next to nothing," says Foster, who created an 8-
by-8-foot kitchen for the rock-bottom price of $3,110. Total.
Found, used, or hand-me-down items made it possible, says Foster,
of the Providence design firm Reconstructure. The 8-foot-long
stainless-steel sink and counter, for example, was a $100 yard-sale
