When longtime road racing analyst Toni Reavis examines the intense
rivalry between athletes from Kenya and Ethiopia, he actually sees
baseball.
"They are the two best running nations in the world and they just
happen to be cheek by jowl over there in East Africa," said Reavis,
who has covered the Boston Marathon on television and in print for
nearly 30 years. "It's like anything else, it's like, why are the Red
Sox and Yankees such rivals? They're real good and they're in close
proximity. That creates rivalries."
The Kenyans have dominated Boston for more than a decade, winning
13 of the last 14 men's races, including last year's, won by Timothy
